Placer County, California The Short Answer: A Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) My Definition: The anti-SUV Last month I started to see a bunch of "NEV Route" signs going up along many of the streets in the City of Rocklin, California. My first question: "What the heck is an NEV?" I did a little research and found some answers that I will share with you. An NEV is a battery-powered street legal vehicle that is limited to routes with a posted speed limit of 35 mph (55 kph) or less. The acronym N.E.V. stands for Neighborhood Electric Vehicle. Though there are very few NEV models on the market today, most resemble a golf cart, or some kind of pod about half the size of any subcompact car you've ever seen. Currently, these vehicles have a top speed of about 25 mph (40 kph) and a single-charge range of about 30 miles (48 kilometers). The design of NEV's is governed by vehicle codes and safety regulations, which means that you will need a license, registration and insurance to operate an NEV on the open road. By implementing NEV routes, it seems that our "green" minded city leaders are making way for us to go out and purchase these $7,000-$13,000 electric carts as an alternative, or as a supplement to the cars and trucks we use for everyday trips throughout our communities. If you can get by with an NEV as an alternative to you car, perhaps this is a net benefit to your economic bottom line. If not, perhaps your interest in an NEV will be to help the environment. No?
